EC Chairperson Jean Mensa Asks Political Parties To Disband Vigilante Groups

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Mrs. Jean Mensa, has asked political parties in the country to 'disband all vigilante groups' affiliated to them.

Heavily armed men wearing mask stormed the La Bawaleshie electoral area claiming to be acting on 'intelligence' and allegedly shot and injured some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Initial reports that emerged indicated that they were part of the NPP's 'Invisible Forces'.

However, later, Minister of State in charge of National Security, Byran Acehampong admitted they were depolyed from his outfit.

Speaking at the second day of sitting of the Emile Short's Commission, Jean Mensa said: "it is also important for the parties to disband their vigilante groups. If you look at what happened at the polling station, it was not anything that had to do with our officers; they were conducting themselves very well . . . so we need to call on our parties to do away with the vigilantes."
