Dambai Chosen As Capital For Oti Region

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named Dambai as the capital of the newly created Oti Region.

The President made the announcement Friday, February 15, 2019, at a ceremony to present the Constitutional Instrument 112 (CI 117) which gives the Oti Region legal backing.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced Sefwi-Wiawso as the capital of the newly created Western North Region

He named Dr. Archibald Letsa, Volta Regional Minister as caretaker Minister for the region until a substantive one is appointed.

This brings to six the presentation of the Constitutional Instruments for the creation of the new regions: Oti, Savannah, North East, Bono East, Western North and the Ahafo regions.

Prior to the announcement by the President, many had tipped the likes of Kete-Krachie or Jasikan to be made the Oti regional capital.

Dambai is located on the eastern coast of the Volta Lake. Is the fastest growing town in the Volta Region of Ghana. It is located in the heart of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) area.

The town has a vibrant market that falls on Monday and Tuesday to which market people across the Krachi East District and Togo come to. The occupation of the inhabitants is farming and fishing on the River Oti with few inhabitants being employed by offices of the district assembly and teaching.

Dambai has several tourist attractions. The famous of which include the ferry that is used to cross the river. There are also ancestral shrines including the Jabuni, Denteh and Tigare shrines.

Presentation of CI's On New Regions

According to the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, “delegations comprising chiefs and people of the new regions have been invited to the Jubilee House in Accra for the official ceremonies.”

The schedule for presentation was as follows:

Tuesday, 12 February 2019 – North East with Nalerigu as capital
Savannah Region with Damongo as capital

Wednesday 13 February 2019 – Bono East with Techiman announced as capital
Ahafo with Goaso as capital.

Friday, 15 February 2019 – Western North with Sefwi Wiawso as capital
Oti Region with Dambai as capital

The presentation of the CI follows the December 27, 2018 referendum that massively approved the creation of the regions.
