'Ofosu-Ampofo Will Not Go Scot-free . . . He’ll Be Used As An Example' - Effah Dartey Assures

An Accra-based legal practitioner and a former Deputy Minister for Local Government under Ex-President Kufuor’s administration, Captain Nkrabea Effah Dartey (rtd) has emphatically stated that NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo will be dealt with aptly after his bail.

According to him, charges leveled against the NDC Chairman is a caution of what he is likely to face in court.

“He should not be happy, this is just a caution,” he said.

Ofosu-Ampofo spent over five hours at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Accra being interrogated over a leaked tape with security implications.

He is facing charges of threat of harm, conspiracy to commit harm, rioting and assaulting a public officer.

In a meeting with party communicators, the Chairman of the largest opposition party incited his men to “take the Electoral Commission Chairperson to the cleaners” and to “insult the National Peace Council Chairman”.

Charged supporters of the 'Umbrella' family besieged the surroundings of the CID headquarters demanding the release of their Chairman after hours of waiting on the street.

Moments after Ofosu-Ampofo was released around 17:45GMT, the agitating supporters went into a state of a jamboree.

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo stepped out to calm the crowd and assured them "the police were professional” in handling him.

He said NDC will not subvert the peace of Ghana and thanked the party’s leadership for being behind him.

But Lawyer Nkrabea Effah Dartey in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ said “all the charges against him are appropriate. If the police show some seriousness on these charges unlike Kennedy Agyapong’s charges, then he will be in trouble”.

"But this time, we the NPP are serious, we have to show Ofosu-Ampofo that we [NPP] are in power and we are maintaining law and order in Ghana. This is not an issue of where power lies, this is rule of law,” he said.

“If NPP is in power, why should you [Ofosu-Ampofo] make such reckless statement that you cannot substantiate in public. The NPP is noted for rule of law and he will not go scot-free,” he guaranteed.

Lawyer Nkrabea Effah Dartey however noted that Mr Ofosu-Ampofo will be “used as an example” to deter others from making such “reckless” comments in future.

“God forbid that Ghana will experience war because of someone’s reckless comment,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.
