Today marks an important day in the history of not just our Motherland Ghana but Africa as whole. Exactly 62 years ago, Ghana gained her Independence from British colonial rule and brought an end to several decades of direct control and influence by the imperialist and colonialist power.

Throughout history, students have continually played substantive roles in the fight for freedom and justice and also in resisting oppressors rule. This is evident in the fight for the establishment of the National Service Scheme, Students Loan Trust Fund, GETFUND among others.

Today, the National Union of Ghana Students wishes to encourage Ghana students to continue to cherish our freedom, empower one another in peace and unity. We must hold our independence with the spirit that ensures we moved forward and not backward in our achievements for the continent.

As students, we must not fail the future, we must not fail the next generation, we must continue to shape the politics and policies of today to benefit the future of students and youth who will take over for us.

As Ghanaian Students, let us continue to protect the freedom and integrity our founding fathers fought hard for and fight to make Ghana a better place for all. Forward remains our watch word.

God bless our Homeland, Ghana!
