The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will respond to the New Patriotic Party’s letter inviting them for a meeting over the disbandment of their vigilante groups.
Speaking in an interview on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa on Wednesday, the NDC’s National Organizer, Joshua Akamba, said there is no cause for alarm over the proposal to disband vigilante groups, and that they are committed to finding a lasting solution to the issue.
The call for a meeting follows a charge by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the two leading political parties to meet up and reach a consensus towards fighting off the menace.
Although there has been a bit of a back-and-forth between the two parties regarding the meeting, the NPP officially wrote to the opposition last week inviting them to a meeting to dialogue on disbanding vigilante groups.
A letter signed by its General Secretary, John Boadu, to the National Chairman of the NDC said the invitation has not “only been necessitated by the President’s call during the 2019 State of the Nation Address, but also the legitimate concerns expressed by overwhelming Ghanaians about this menace and the need for the two political parties to do the needful in the interest of the nation”.
Reacting to the letter in an interview, Joshua Akamba assured that “by the close of today, NDC will answer the letter because we are committed to peace so that the country will move forward”.
“I can assure you that NDC is all for it, and by the close of day today, NDC will appropriately reply the letter so that there will be peace in 2020 if that is what the NPP want,” he explained.
Mr. Akamba added that “we are ready and we will be part of any peaceful move. So NDC as a political party welcomes it. We are all for it.”
He said the NDC executives will meet on the issue in Accra today, Wednesday, to decide on the way forward.
“We have to discuss it so we will have a meeting on it today and we shall discuss it. There is no harm in considering the venue so we will discuss it, and I can assure you that there will be positive response,” Mr. Akamba assured.
