Political Violence: I Was Nearly Beaten In Talensi - Bernard Mornah

Recounting on the Talensi by-election, PNC Chairman Bernard Mornah hinted that it took the instructions of Sammy Awuku, now National Organizer of the NPP to stop something untoward from happening as some boys came around to visit mayhem on them, including the NPP's Addai Nimo at a polling station.

He stressed that not only NPP and NDC go to polling stations to vote during elections, as many Ghanaians who are not politically inclined also exercise their franchise on their convictions without necessarily affiliated to any political party; hence, everyone can be affected in election violence.

"There were instances my brother Sammy Awuku will tell you that at a particular polling station, when he was coming, I had just got there and Addai Nimo was there and you can ask my Youth Organizer, Awudu Issak, but for the instructions of Sammy Awuku, I am sure that something could have happened because some boys came around and they wanted to visit mayhem on us," he recalled.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Bernard Mornah averred that he nearly suffered from an attack but later learnt that Addai Nimo, a member of the NPP was their target.

“ . . all of us were at the polling station and so when we go to vote and some people come around to disturb, will they ask the political party you belong before they will disturb? The young man who was shot at Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and is likely to be amputated, he is a footballer who came from India to vote and he was affected in the process," he indicated.

He again pointed out that there are people who are independent minded who may be going to vote against Akufo-Addo without necessarily belonging to any political party, but rather depending on failure of the government to implement certain policies.

“Some people may be going to vote against Akufo-Addo because he failed to implement 'one village one dam' and he is building a National Cathedral against all reasonable conscience and that person may not belong to any other political party, but because of vulgar policies of the government they want to vote against him,” he said.

“Someone may not have voted before but because of the National Holiday Amendment act, he is angry at the government and wants to vote against the NPP. So there are many reasons for which people go to the polling station to vote. So, all of us can be affected and not only NPP and NDC," he stressed.

He insisted that he cannot agree with President Akufo-Addo when he said other political parties apart from NPP and NDC are not being targeted as he was one of the people who were targeted at the Talensi by-election but it took the protection of the police to secure his life.
