PRESS STATEMENT OF THE BONO, BONO-EAST AND AHAFO PATRIOTIC CAUCUS (BAPAC) ON THE RECENT ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN GHANA

Citizens of Bono, Bono-East and Ahafo Regions who are Members of the New Patriotic Party resident in Accra (BAPAC) wish to extend their condolences to the Families and Loved ones of the victims of the road carnage on the Kintampo-Techiman Road and that of the Central Region.

As we mourn the dead, BAPAC wishes to state that more effective measures need to implemented to drastically reduce the avoidable deaths on our Ghanaian Roads. As a Nation, we should not always wait until precious lives are lost before action is taken.

BAPAC is solidly behind the National Road Safety Commission in its effort to pragmatically deal with the carnage on our roads. BAPAC recommends the following measures among others:

1. Intensifying Education on Road Safety

2. Overhaul the system of the issuance of Driving Licenses to ensure that only those who qualify to receive Licenses get them.

3. Installing Speed Cameras on our Highways to track oversleeping drivers.

4. Ensuring severe punishment for reckless driving

5. Ensuring that long distance vehicles ply our roads with two drivers at a time to ensure that overtired drivers could take some rest whilst other take over.

6. Ensuring that all Commercial Vehicles have more than one Exit Door. This is to ensure easy and faster exit of passengers in case of emergencies.

7. Adequate Budgetary Allocation is given to the National Road Safety Commission and other Road Safety Institutions to facilitate the implementation of planned road safety measures.

Enough is enough of Road Traffic Accidents in Ghana. We should walk our talk by taking appropriate actions. Human lives are too precious to be lost the way we continue to witness on our Roads.
