My Hubby Killed Himself

Mrs Rose Helter, 74, wife of Eric Helter, the German who allegedly shot himself in his room, has confirmed that her husband indeed killed himself. According to her, Eric Helter was first seen sitting outside their self-contained house for fresh air, since he normally complained of severe heat in his room. She said Eric, after sitting outside for some time, normally returned to his room whenever he wanted to sleep and "at his own convenient time". Mrs Helter, an ailing woman, indicated that around 11.00pm, she heard a gunshot and called her maidservant to find out what was amiss. "My maid entered his room first and later held me, telling me not to enter and that we needed the assistance of the police first." She narrated that when the police came in, they told her not to worry and that her husband was still breathing, and they rushed him to the hospital. "Two weeks before the fateful day, I saw my husband as a changed person. He looked distressed but would never talk to me, and he took to drinking," she added. "We lived in separate rooms because of my sickness. I fell and broke my arm before the New Year and he had been taking care of me and also treating my wound." Mrs Helter emphasised that she had been married to Eric Helter for the past 36 years and they had since lived like brother and sister. "We never hid anything from each other since he was all that I had." Recounting the early days of their relationship, Mrs. Helter, a retired teacher and a Ghanaian, said she met her husband, who was an engineer, back in Germany." She disclosed that they only returned to the country recently and moved into the hired apartment six months ago and since then, everything had been moving on well for them until the day of the incident. Speaking with passion, she said, "1 believe if I was near him, he would have killed me also with the gun. "This is the time to enjoy our old age and now you have left me in this condition. What do you now' want me to do?" she soliloquized. It would be recalled that a German was alleged to have shot himself in his room at Adenta, near Frafraha with a revolver in his bedroom. He committed the act on Thursday February 5, 2010 but died the following morning at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital whilst receiving medical attention.
