A pressure group known as “Kumasi Parliament” led a massive cleanup exercise to rid parts of the Ashanti Regional capital of filth, including the seat of the overlord of the Asante Kingdom.

The clean-up exercise which was organized over the weekend is aimed at making the Manhyia Palace and surrounding towns look clean and appealing.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, one of Africa’s most revered monarchs is marking 20 years milestone on the sacred Golden Stool, this year.

Speaking to the media afterwards, President of the group, Dr. Emmanuel Tweneboah Koduah, said the exercise is to honour the King for his selfless leadership over the past years.

The move, he stressed, was particularly timely as the raining season sets in, to prevent perennial floods.

“We as a group, in collaboration with various stakeholders are determined to keep the city clean particularly all routes leading to the Manhyia Palace as our King marks this anniversary. We also urge others to come on board to make this historic anniversary a success”, Dr. Tweneboah Koduah stressed.

Presidential Staffer Nana Owusu Acheampong, leading member of ‘Kumasi Parliament” and who is also the Special Aide to Hon. Hawa Koomson indicated the group’s readiness to support His Majesty in this historic celebration.

KMA Mayor

Kumasi Mayor, Hon Osei Assibey Antwi who took part in the exercise, commended the group for the initiative.

He expressed the assembly’s commitment of getting the city rid of filth, urging residents to support the “Keep Kumasi Clean and Green” project.

He however admonished residents and other groups to embark on such exercises as Ghana joins the rest of the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6; which stresses on a quality drinking water and good sanitation.

Nana Buabasa, who represented the Asantehene, lauded the group for the initiative; he urges similar groups to emulate same to create awareness of the event. He also called on residents in Kumasi to keep their surroundings clean.

The exercise brought together hundreds of residents, known Kumasi pressure groups, traders, Members of Parliament, government institutions and various supporters across the political divide.
