General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia has given empirical evidence of what it means and feels for a political party to lose an election and to be in opposition.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi TV, General Mosquito as he is popularly known in politics, testified to how his party (NDC) felt after losing major elections in Ghana and the signs when people desire political change.

“We have lost elections before, the 2004 election and in fact the 2000 election that we lost, seven to eight months after that defeat nobody could speak on radio stations on behalf of the NDC and even if you were driving in town, you feared to identify yourself as NDC.

“So we saw that the mood of the population was for a change and they got the change,” he revealed.

However, General Mosquito added that with the 2016 election, though they lost they are confident they will bounce back in 2020 to rule the country because the story after their defeat is different.
 
“The 2016 election, the day after our defeat when I was driving through Accra I was still being cheered and that is why the party has been able to bounce back quickly,” he said.

Mr Nketia said some electoral problems accounted for their loss in the 2016 elections.

“The then Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson announced that their system had been hacked and such a claim by the EC could potentially affect the integrity of the election result that saw the NDC’s presidential candidate and then President losing to President Nana Akufo-Addo by nearly one million votes,” he added.
