Dep. Minister Apologises For Tariff Increment…Says Akufo-Addo Can No Longer Subsidize

"It was reduced for some time to bring relief to Ghanaians but you can only do up to a point. Now it's difficult to continue because the money is not there so we plead with Ghanaians; they should understand and support this government. If the government can reduce in the future, it will be done" Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Eugene Boakye Antwi said in reaction to the increase in electricity and water tariffs.

He was speaking on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo', Tuesday.

Background

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved an 8.01 percent increment in water tariff, effective July 2019.

At a press conference, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Maame Dufie Ofori, said the depreciation of the cedi to the dollar, projected inflation rate and increasing electricity and water demands have necessitated the increment.

The PURC last Friday approved an 11.17% tariff increase for electricity from July 1.
