Dr. Grace Bediako Is Bias - MP

The Member of Parliament for Jaman South in the Brong Ahafo Region, Yaw Mahama Afful, has accused Government Statistician, Dr Grace Bediako, of bias. According to Mr. Afful, Dr Bediako is being biased towards government on statistics about the economy so as to gain favour from the Mills administration. He made the allegation on Adom FM on Thursday in reaction to figures released by the Ghana Statistical Service which shows the countrys economic growth rate at 7.7 percent. According to reports from the Statistical Service, Ghanas economic growth rate is 7.7 percent with the services sector maintaining its dominance as the biggest contributor to the GDP. The sector was also the fastest growing with 9.8 percent, followed by industry with 5.6 and 5.3 for agriculture. But the NPP MP said Dr Grace Bediako has massaged the figures to pursue governments agenda. He said the Government Statistician is trying to please government in order to secure her job. Mr. Afful explained that it is a normal phenomenon in Africa for heads of independent state institutions to change their ideologies for fear of losing their jobs, saying Dr Grace Bediako is a typical example calling her actions unfortunate. He told Adom FM that he was arguing based on discrepancies in the figures of the Population and Housing Census conducted in 2010 and called on Ghanaians to reject the new figures. He added that even though he does not believe in the figures provided the 7. 7 per cent growth rate is no news because the erstwhile NPP administration created the enabling environment for the viable growth rate that the NDC government is enjoying.
