The leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on students in the various Senior High Schools to desist from resorting to violence as a means to solving problems.

This call was made during the 35th annual congress of the Greater Accra Regional Students Representative Council (GARSRC) which was organized on Saturday, April 24, 2021. GARSRC is a student representative body comprising all government assisted Senior High Schools in the Greater Accra Region as well as a few private ones. The congress was on the theme “Education amidst crisis”. This was a platform where the various student leaders from member institutions shared their perspectives on how best the standards of Senior High School education can be maintained in the post lockdown era.

Speaking during a special session of the congress organized by NUGS in partnership with Ghana gas, the Deputy CEO of the National Youth Authority Mrs Akosua Manu who happened to be the Special Guest of Honour encouraged the various student leaders to find alternative means to channeling their grievances to their respective institutional authorities than falling on violence.

Some senior high school students have been in the news for perpetuating violence in a bid to get their grievances addressed. With some even going to the extent of verbally assaulting the President of the country. This has been very worrisome and the gathering of leaders from some of the senior high schools was a perfect time to have an extensive conversation on proper means of channeling grievances. The 2019 inter-colleges sports competition in Accra saw students moving from one campus to the other attacking each other and destroying properties.

The student leaders present at the session pledged to non-violence in their dealings with their respective authorities. This pledge was recorded and is expected to be broadcasted to reach all senior high school students in the country.

Isaac Jay Hyde, the President of NUGS expressed gratitude to the Ghana Gas Company, most especially the CEO for his continuous support for the Union and youth based projects at large.
