Group Attacks Mills Over Broken Promises

THE NORTHERN sector branch of the Northern Youth for Nana Akufo-Addo (NOYONAA), a pro New Patriotic Party (NPP) group has taken a swipe at the National Democratic (NDC) administration over what they termed as failed promises to the people of the area. During a media interaction, NOYONAA said in the run up to the 2008 elections, the NDC promised to carve out a separate region from the present vast northern region which has made its administration very difficult. But two years down the lane, the present administration has reneged on that promise leaving the region to suffer more under development while other regions enjoy various developmental projects. They lamented that during the final funeral rites of Yagbonwura Bawah Doshie the Vice President, John Mahama re-echoed this promise and said people in the area should not welcome the NDC during the 2012 election campaign period if government fails to execute construction of the Damongo-Fufulso road. Successive regional ministers have all identified and seen the need for the split of the region into two or more due to its vast nature which makes administration very difficult and have therefore initiated moves for its partition, but regrettably, the NDC government is dragging its feet the whole process and turned northern Ghana into laughing stock they emphasized. The group also accused the government of not being truthful to northerners over the implementation of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA). They noted the NDC was full of broken promises as they have equally failed to pay into the SADA fund, the seed money of $200 million as well as the yearly $100 million as promised. We should have had at least a minimum of 400 million dollars in the SADA account, some offices and appointments of key staff to manage the scheme had the government made due its promise, they remarked. Spokesperson Sham-Una Ghazi together with members drawn from the Upper East, Upper West, Northern regions and some party sympathizers in attendance, also blamed the NDC for worsening the security situation in the region. He mentioned Buipe, Gushegu, Garizegu and Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo as areas where the safety of residents cannot be guaranteed because NDC supporters have taken the law into their hands and escaped punishment, thereby promoting impunity in the country. On infrastructural development, the spokesperson observed that while former President Kufuor was busily commissioning multi-billion dollar projects like the new sports stadium, the Biwater project and road projects under the Millennium Challenge Compact (MiDA), President Mills is content with the commissioning of boreholes and toilets. He described the situation as mediocrity of the highest order and called for the rejection of the NDC in 2012 to pave way for a more development-oriented government. Mr. Sham-Una Ghazi further disclosed that NOYONAA was going to train and equip about 400 canvassers with the vision of Nana Akufo-Addo for Northern Ghana vis--vis the failed promises of the Mills administration for Northern Ghana to enhance their door-to-door outreach programmes in the rural areas. NOYONAA was formed across the country with the aim of ensuring victory for the NPP in the 2012 general election after several outcries by the masses due to what they termed the slow paced governance by the current regime.
