Green Ghana Day: Asantehene, Others Plant Trees In KumasiĀ 

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has joined other personalities to plant trees at the Golf Park in Kumasi of the Ashanti Region to commemorate this year’s Green Ghana Day.

Other personalities included the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Forest, Hon Benito Owusu Bio, Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah, the Kumasi Mayor, Hon Sam Pyne and Director for Forestry Commission Training Centre, Hon Andy Okrah.

In 2021, under the distinguished leadership of the President of the Republic, HE. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Green Ghana Project was launched as part of an aggressive reforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and to contribute to the global effort to fight climate change.

Ghana is expected to plant 10 million seedlings to mark the 2023 edition of Green Ghana Day and Ashanti Region is to plant 2 million of the seedlings.

The region according to the Lands Ministry, has over the years since the inception of the Green Ghana Project planted more trees than any other region.

It will be recalled that Asantehene during the launch of Green Ghana Day at KNUST last month underscored the importance of afforestation as a country whose forest reserve has been lost to illegal logging, illegal mining among other human activities.

He also reiterated the efforts and contributions made by his Palace to protecting the Lake Bosomtwe catchment area by growing trees annually even before the implementation of Green Ghana Day by the government.

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources incharge of Forest who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Hon Benito Owusu Bio also explained the commitment of the government to protecting and mitigating climate change effects.

He believed the effect of climate change has widely affected every life therefore he called on Ghanaians to support the project.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah and Director of Forestry Commission Training Centre, Hon Andy Okrah who shared same sentiments about the spate forest reserves are depleting urged all to partake in the project irrespective of one’s social life.
