6,451 Fail GES Teacher Licensure Exams…Only 1,277 Passed

A total of 6,451 prospective teachers failed the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination conducted in May 2023, according to the Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Christian Addai-Poku.

The Registrar speaking in an interview on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo' explained "5000 out of 7000 passed Literacy, 56 percent passed Numeracy and about 54 percent passed Essential Professional Skills".

According to him, English is very important in teaching. "Every teacher needs basic knowledge in literacy to be able to teach. So we test the prospective teachers on that. They are also tested on numeracy to be able to convert figures..."

Dr Addai Poku has advised that some of these prospective teachers undergo counselling to be sure that teaching is truly their passion.

"Some of them have completed teacher training schools, Universities, etc so the question is how they were able to complete the school if they keep failing the licensure exams but...we get these results every time...some have written one paper ten times. It's worrying because had it not been for the licensure exams they will all enter directly into teaching"
