John Mahama's Comment Is Subversive of The Judiciary - Nana Akomea

Chief Executive Officer of the InterCity State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, on Tuesday September, 2023, on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that former President Mahama’s comment on the Judiciary is subversive of the institution.

Former President Mahama last Sunday at a meeting with NDC lawyers stated that President Akufo-Addo has packed the courts with Judges who are members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

President Mahama exhorted NDC lawyers to be ready to be appointed to the Bench to "balance out the NPP" Judges.

Nana Akomea opined that Mahama’s statement signaled a formal intention to polarize the Judiciary is unprecedented in the fourth Republic, a development which, if allowed, will destroy the integrity of the Judiciary and formally politicize the administration of justice in Ghana.

“The numbers of Supreme Court Justices as at 2016, when Mahama was President, was fourteen. The numbers are now, in 2023, fifteen, so where lies Mahama’s claim that the Court has been packed?”

Nana Akomea also asserted that the political inclination is not part of the criteria required of appointees to the High, Appeals and Supreme Courts, so "where did former President Mahama get the political party membership of the Judges from?"

He further stated that anytime the former President felt aggrieved by action of a State entity, he proceeded to bastardize the institution and impugn the integrity of the members of that institution.

Nana Akomea mentioned the former President doing same to the Electoral Commission, the National Identification Authority and the Supreme Court.

He concluded that with this intention to give political colouring to the courts, it will be dangerous for justice administration to elect Mahama as President in 2024.
