Showdown D-day Finally Arrives: Will It Be Ken, Bawumia, Afriyie Akoto Or Addai-Nimoh?

The day for the showdown has finally arrived as delegates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) decide who leads the party in the 2024 general elections.

The delegates will be selecting one out of four presidential aspirants: Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Mahamudu Bawumia who have been campaigning vigorously for the past months.

In all, a total of 208,342 delegates are expected to cast their ballot across various constituencies in the country.

The delegates include:

398 MPs/MMDCEs,
28 Ministers/Deputy Ministers,
50 Foundation Members,
61 National Council members,
30 Patrons & Council of Elders,
272 Regional Officers, and
4,675 Constituency Officers,
1,375 Constituency Patrons,
1,375 Constituency Council of Elders,
6,272 Electoral Area Coordinators,
193,110 Polling Station Executives,
405 Overseas Branches, and
291 members of TESCON.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, confirmed that all preparations for a successful election on Saturday had been completed.

“I can tell you and the party’s rank and file that we are ready. The Electoral Commission is ready, the Ghana Police Service is also ready, and I believe that delegates and the aspirants themselves are also ready,” he averred.

Predictions

According to a poll by Global Info Analytics, Dr Bawumia is still in the lead, followed by Kennedy Agyapong.

The Executive Director and Head of Global Research, Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwah said the opinion poll showed Dr Bawumia leading the race with 43.5 per cent, and his closest challenger, Mr Agyapong, with 23.5 per cent, while Mr Addai-Nimoh and Dr Afriyie Akoto took the third and fourth positions with 0.4 per cent and 0.3 per cent, respectively.

In no particular order, below are the profiles of the candidates:

KENNEDY AGYAPONG

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, born on 16 June 1960, is a businessman and a Member of Parliament of Assin Central.

He was first elected MP in 2000 for the seat of Assin North. He retained his seat in the 2004 and 2008 parliamentary elections.

In 2012, he was elected to the new seat of Assin Central and was re-elected in 2016. He also retained his seat in the 2020 general elections. He is currently the chairman of the Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee and an aspirant for the presidency on the NPP ticket.

FRANCIS ADDAI-NIMOH

Francis Addai-Nimoh was born on 23 March 1965. He is a development planner and civil engineer by profession. In 2008, he contested for the Mampong constituency seat on the ticket of the NPP and won. He continued to serve in parliament until January 2017.


He contested the NPP’s presidential primaries in 2014 and lost.

DR. AFRIYIE AKOTO

Owusu Afriyie Akoto (born 19 October 1949) is a Ghanaian agricultural economist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament for the Kwadaso Constituency from 2009 to 2017. He is also a former  Agriculture Minister.

Afriyie Akoto was employed by the International Coffee Organisation in London, England, for over a decade. Among the positions he held include economist, senior economist, principal economist, and chief economic advisor. He also served as a consultant to the World Bank (a United Nations agency) on soft commodities—namely, cocoa, coffee, and sugar.

Dr MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA

Dr. Bawumia was born on 7 October, 1963. He is the current vice-president of Ghana. Bawumia was a deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana until he was nominated the vice presidential candidate of the NPP in 2008.

As a running mate, he ran alongside Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 general elections. He was the lead witness for the petitioners in the 2012/2013 Presidential Election Petition, which challenged the declaration of John Mahama as the election winner.
