Confusion Over KMA Market

THE SUCCESSFUL completion of a market complex at the Abinkyi area in Kumasi which is being facilitated by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) may suffer a hitch as confusion over is who the lawful contractor executing the project, has reared its ugly head. A new market in the area has become necessary due to the evacuation of traders at the race course area in order to pave way for the construction of the Sunshine City project which is under the auspices of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Two Kumasi based construction firms, T & K Enterprise Limited and Country Development Contracts Limited (CDCL) are both claiming ownership of the multi-million contract. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CDCL, one Asafo Adjei, has been saying on radio of late that he is the rightful owner of the contract and that any traders who deal with the current contractors do so at their own risk. But at a press conference dubbed Setting the records straight on the Abinkyi market facility, the spokesperson for the current sub contractors executing the job rejected Mr. Asafo Adjeis claims. Justice Opoku Danquah noted that though Mr. Asafo Adjei initially had the contract to construct the facility, he willingly relinquished it when he failed to pay an amount of $250,000.00 which is the price of the parcel of land for the project. According to him, when Mr. Asafo Adjei failed to raise the money for the payment of the land, he wrote a letter dated January 4, 2010 and instructed T & K Enterprise, which was a co contractor in the initial agreement to re-negotiate with one Mr. Abuah, the owner of the land. Mr. Opoku stressed that Mr. Asafo Adjei cannot claim ownership of the contract because he did not contribute a penny towards the acquisition of the land and that it was T & K Enterprise which mobilized funds for that purpose. Assuring traders that their dealing with the current contractors was in the right direction, Mr. Opoku tasked Mr. Asafo Adjei to go to court if he feels that his contract has been unlawfully taken from him.
