The head of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwesi Jonah has said President Mills must not be coerced into satisfying the various requests made by former president Rawlings in his speech at the Sunyani congress.
Former President Rawlings, speaking in his capacity as Party Founder and chairman of the party's Council of Elders, raised concerns about the performance of the judiciary and suggested that government is not in control of some important public institutions including the security agencies.
He indicated that the supporters of the NDC are unhappy about this development and feel unsafe although their party is in power.
These are criticisms the Mills administration has disagreed with on several occasions. Dr. Jonah told Citi News it will be disastrous if the president attempts to address all the concerns of Mr. Rawlings. �There are some of the concerns that the sitting president can address, there are others that he cannot do anything about. For example, if he takes somebody to court and the court says the person is not guilty, there is nothing the president can do.
"I think the president can go back, take his (Rawlings') grievances, one by one, there are issues to do with how some foot soldiers have been treated, how some sections of the party have been neglected after they had worked so hard for the party to achieve victory in the 2008, those are issues that the president may be can do something about�.
