Legon Squatters Arrested

SEVEN SQUATTERS at the University of Ghana who were allegedly terrorizing staff and students on campus have been hauled before an Accra Circuit Court for being on the schools premises illegally. Some of these people are said to be dealing in narcotic drugs. One of the seven arrested, Roger Zong, a driver, was found using Indian hemp when a team of policemen bumped into them at their place of settlement. The others are Richard Annor Amankwah, a farmer; Kwaku Peter Agboda, a tailor; Kwame Akanyona, a waste collector; Joe Nelson, a labourer; Joseph Ablisah, a cleaner and Francis Tindani, a trader. They were charged with the offence of being on the premises for unlawful purposes at the court presided over by Eric Kyei Baffuor. Zong is facing an additional charge of using narcotic drugs without authority. The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charge. All the accused persons were remanded into police custody after the prosecutor, Chief Inspector J.K.Anim, informed the court that investigations were still on-going. The prosecutor told the court that on August 19, 2011 at about 17:20, the Legon District Police Command, led by Supt. Mr. F.W.Anning, conducted a swoop on the university campus where suspected criminals were hiding in the bush, terrorizing students and staff. During the swoop, the accused persons were arrested and when a search was conducted, one wrapper of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found in Zongs possession. The other six accused persons were found hiding in the bush, allegedly planning to commit crime. However, upon seeing the police, they took to their heels but the police managed to arrest them. The prosecutor said all the accused persons, in their caution statement, denied the offence.
