Cop Dies In Motorbike Crash

AN OFF-DUTY police officer stationed at Awiaso in the Adansi North District of Ashanti region who was riding his motorcycle, died Wednesday night after running into a moving articulated truck. Lance Corporal Isaac Karim, 34, died on the spot around 8:30 pm near Ayokoa community on the Fomena-New Edubiase highway after he sustained a deep cut on his forehead. A 27-year-old friend of the cop, who was identified as Kojo Afoakwa, also died on the way to hospital, DSP Daniel Amoah, Fomena District Police Commander, told DAILY GUIDE. Kojo was on the same motorbike with his police officer friend heading towards a police barrier near Adansi Asokwa junction when the incident occurred. Both men were not wearing helmets, the police commander added. According to him, the police officer might have oversped and lost control of the motorbike while trying to overtake the articulated truck with registration number WR 30 65 C, resulting in the fatal accident. An eyewitness told the paper that as the cop was attempting to overtake the truck, a vehicle that was coming from the opposite direction emerged, which got him frightened so he tried to move back but lost control in the process and ran into the truck. The paper gathered that Lance Corporal Karim smashed his head against a metal bar at the rear of the truck, leading to his instant death, while Afoakwa died on the way to the hospital probably due to internal bleeding. DSP Amoah said the 34-year-old officer was billed for a peace-keeping exercise at Yendi and had booked to head to Kumasi to join his colleagues for the exercise. He was in a police overall uniform when he met his untimely death and got married about six months ago The remains of the duo had been deposited at the New Edubiase Government hospital awaiting autopsy, the police boss indicated. He cautioned motorists and cyclists to adhere to the road traffic regulations and live by the laws governing transportation.
