THE DRUG Law Enforcement Unit of the Volta Regional Police Headquarters has arrested a policeman, General Police Corporal Aniagyei Bonsu, for the possession of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, popularly called �wee�. Corporal Aniagyei was in the company of one Ernest Akoto, who claimed to be trading in biscuits, when he was arrested. The policeman, whose service number was quoted as 34523 and stationed at the Keta Division of the Ghana Police Service and his accomplices, were arrested at Sokode-Etoe, a few kilometres to Ho last Tuesday morning at about six o�clock. The Regional Police Commander, Alex Bedie, an Assistant Commissioner of Police who briefed a section of the media, disclosed that hours after the arrest, the IGP ordered the interdiction of Corporal Bonsu. He said the swiftness of his interdiction gave impetus to the commitment of the Police Service to eradicate drug trade in the country, irrespective of the culprits involved. Narrating the arrest, the regional commander said the Drug Law Enforcement unit had information about the transport of some dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from Kpeve through Ho to Aflao. A team led by one Detective Inspector Joseph Nakoja camped at Sokode Lotkoe and intercepted the exhibits. The team noticed a Peugeot 405 saloon car being driven by a man in a police uniform, and that turned out to be Cpl Aniagyei Bonsu who was accompanied by another man, Ernest Akoto. On searching the vehicle with registration number GR 4384 M, the police personnel found 60 parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The parcels were designed like loaves of bread to apparently outwit security on the route. The two claimed they were contracted by a lady called Jane to convey them from Kpeve to Aflao. They however declined to show the location of the collection point at Kpeve, the destination at Aflao and the identity as well as whereabouts of Jane. Ernest Akoto also claimed ownership of the vehicle. Mr. Bedie noted that further investigations revealed that the two were schoolmates at Akim-Oda in the Eastern Region many years ago. They eventually met in Ashaiman where Cpl Bonsu was formerly stationed and stayed in touch since then.According to the suspects, this was their fifth operation. Mr Bedie said investigations were still ongoing.Meanwhile, the suspects will be arraigned while the exhibits will be sent to the police forensic laboratory in Accra for testing. He therefore called on the public to continue volunteering information on criminals and other nefarious activities to help maintain peace and order in the country.
