Government Sets 40m For New Districts

The government has set aside a seed fund of GhC 40 million to enable the newly created district assemblies to set off on good footing, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has stated. He said this is to avoid the situation where assemblies were created and were not given the needed infrastructure foundation to operate smoothly. According to him, many assemblies are struggling to meet and provide for their districts because when they were set up, basic necessities such as office buildings, accommodation for the chief executive and the seed capital to build amenities were not provided. The creation of the new districts, the minster stated, would accelerate development, justifying the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto pledge of an even and balanced development across the country. He said when parliament resumes from recess the necessary legislation will be made to officially set the new districts in motion. He debunked questions from the media that the creation of the new assemblies is politically motivated and is meant for job for the boys. He said a lot of petitions were made by traditional councils requesting for district assemblies, but the technical people at the ministry considered the ones that needed urgent attention and went on to create them. According to the minister, they are still studying the other petitions. He pleaded with them to remain calm hoping with the new assemblies the country would see massive accelerated development.
