A former mayor of Accra, Nat Nunoo Amarteifio, has disclosed that a whopping amount of $80 million was spent to clean up the Odorna drainage in the city, but the exercise failed due to frequent dumping of refuse in the system.
He said the aim of the operation was to help solve the perennial flooding in the city.
Speaking on Citi FM's Breakfast Show on Tuesday, Amarteifio said until Ghanaians change their apathetic attitude and adopt a positive behaviour to help the nation move forward, natural disasters such as floods will continue to bedevil the west African country. "We only managed to dredge some part because it was continuously being filled with rubbish," he said.
He added: "We can't change Accra until we are willing to change our attitudes. If we don't change our attitudes, planning won't take us anywhere." Amarteifio called on Ghanaians to support the mayor by taking up responsibility and act upon it.
The former mayor said the construction works ongoing on the Graphic Road could be partly blamed for last Wednesday's flood because the Odorna drainage has been blocked. Floods recently visited Accra claiming the lives of 12 people and washed away several household property running into millions of Ghana cedis.
