Calm Returns To Obuasi As 62 Galamsey Operators Are Released

Calm has returned to Obuasi after 62 illegal miners arrested on Friday were released by the Police. The police in Obuasi fired canisters of tear gas to quell a protest by a section of illegal miners referred to as galamsey operators, who were up in arms against the arrest of 150 of their members. The protestors accused some personnel of the national security to have made the arrest with no apparent reason. The illegal miners staged the protest at the entrance of an Anglogold Ashanti concession in the area on Friday evening and vowed never to budge until their members are released. However, 62 of the 150 arrested illegal miners were released today which seems to have brought some calm in the Obuasi area.
