A multipurpose sports court complex situated at the University of Ghana, Legon was on Thursday handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Sport. The facility worth $100,000 was funded by Anglogold Ashanti Company Limited forms part of the company's social responsibility and contribution towards the provision of sporting infrastructure across the country. Clement Kofi Humado, Minister of Youth and Sports said the project represents the final of the first phase of the construction of four multipurpose courts sponsored by the mining firm in addition to others at Anfoega and Hohoe (both in the Volta Region) and at Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital. He explained that the second phase, which has commenced involves the construction of seven similar courts in various parts of the country whilst the third phase will bring birth to nine courts. �At the end of these Angolgold Ashanti sponsored projects, the country will have 20 multipurpose Sports Courts spread out in all the 10 Regions of the country.� The Minister commended Anglogold Ashanti for coming on board to complement Government�s effort at expanding and increasing the sporting infrastructure base of the country, which will aid in nurturing more talents for the various national teams. Louis Atongo, Managing Director of Architectural and Engineering Service Limited (AESL), consultants for the project, said the design of the court reflects the needs of the beneficiaries. He expressed delight at the completion of the first phase of the project that ensured the handing over to the clients, the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Mrs Pearl Esinam Carberry, Assistant Chief Executive Officer of Lionel Services, contractors for the project said the facility comprises a handball court with in-built dimensions for basketball and volleyball games. Construction for the project which begun in October 2010 was completed in December 2011.
