A 20-year-old unemployed, Kwesi Opoku, who allegedly attempted to commit suicide in a washroom at the Koforidua Regional Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), ended up screaming for help, when the belt the used to tie the noose around his neck began to tighten up. The Police Investigation Officer and other officers had to rush to his rescue quickly, and subsequently rushed him to the Koforidua Regional hospital for treatment, and was later discharged. The suspect who was then being interrogated for being on someones premises unlawfully, asked permission to use the washroom, but kept unusually long there, tying a noose around his neck. Opoku has pleaded guilty to attempted suicide but explained that he is unemployed and staying with his grandmother. He feared his future was getting bleak, after his arrest by the police. Opoku was later arraigned before the Koforidua circuit court, presided over by Mrs. Barbara Charway, and granted a GH1,000 bail to re-appear on Wednesday, March 7. Police Chief Inspector, Moses Ayao informed the court that last February 20, Opoku was arrested for being on someones premises unlawfully and taken to the regional CID for interrogation. While his statement was being taken, Opoku asked to use the toilet, and was shown the washroom of the investigator. He entered it, only to be heard screaming for help later. When the police entered the washroom, they found Opoku attempting to commit suicide, using his belt, and foaming from the mouth. He was rescued and rushed to the regional hospital treated and discharged, and charged.
