The Leader and founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has slammed government over its poor management of the economy which has led to worsening living conditions.

Mrs. Rawlings explained that Ghana had been plunged into a state of hardship which is having a devastating effect on Ghanaians.

She said this when addressing the Eastern Regional Executives and some supporters of the party at Koforidua last Wednesday.

According to Mrs. Rawlings, Ghanaians do not need economic experts to tell them the hardship is so much that every Ghanaian is feeling its devastating effect.

She said the poor condition of Ghanaians has been further worsened by the current energy crisis, which has collapsed a number of industries and rendered many Ghanaians jobless and unproductive. She stressed that the executive arm of government is expected to seek the well-being of the citizenry and not create a state of hardship.

"The executive is expected to champion and lead a national well-being and not hardship,” adding that "the fifth and sixth parliaments have virtually supervised some of the most unspeakable crimes against our nation."

The former First lady emphasized that, the current leadership of the country has veered off the path of clear code of morality for leadership in transparency, probity and accountability set in the 1992 constitution. She said this has led to a high level of corruption in government.

She called on Ghanaians to continue complaining about government's failures to put the government on its toes to prevent further damage to the economy.

She stated that the steady imposition of taxes on Ghanaians by the government is not the panacea to the economic woes of the country; instead it is deepening the hardships of the citizenry.

Mrs Rawlings said the NDP is partnering a Non-Governmental Organization known as Community Organization Bureaux Network of Ghana to create community-based organizations to help create a decentralized participatory democracy for its supporters. She announced the readiness of NDP to contest strongly in the 2016 general election.

Gideon Ampah, the Eastern Regional Secretary of NDP, in an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE, mentioned that the party was witnessing astronomical increase in membership in the region.

He said the party is putting in place strategic measures that would help win some targeted parliamentary seats in the region.
