President John Evans Atta Mills has urged financial institutions to abide by the banking laws and render quality service to Ghanaians.

He said until recently some financial institutions had no or little regard for the country's banking laws and regulations and cautioned such banks that the people wanted nothing but the best of services.

President Mills, however, commended Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) on its quality service, describing it as one of the best banks in Ghana.

President Mills made the remarks when a delegation of the management of the ETI led by Mr Kolapo Lawson, the new Chairman of the Bank, paid a courtesy call on him at the Osu Castle.

President Mills decried the lack of courtesy, poor services, and indiscipline exhibited at some of the banks operating in Ghana.

The President who is a shareholder and customer of the bank expressed the hope that the bank would be an example where other banks would look up to for leadership.

President Mills congratulated the founders of the Bank for their initiative and gave the assurance that Government would provide the needed support for the corporate entity to help develop the economy and offer jobs in the overall scheme of building a better Ghana.

Mr Lawson said the Bank, which was 21 years old, was established as a transnational bank as part of the integration of West Africa, but had grown to cover other parts of Africa.

He said there were about 118,000 shareholders all over Africa with Ghana's Social Security and National Insurance Trust as a major shareholder, and therefore making Ghana to have a strong stake in the bank.
