Power Minister Tours Ghana’s First Solar Assemble Plant

Minister of Power, Dr. Kwame Donkor has called on Ghanaians and Ghanaian institutions to adopt solar energy which is cost effective and has the ability to help our energy conservation efforts amidst the energy crisis the country is currently plunged into.

He made this call when he toured Appliance Masters to inspect ongoing works at the first Solar Assemble plant Facility in Ghana.

The facility is a 10 megawatt Solar Assemble plant in, which is the first of its kind in the country will be due for commissioning in September 2015.

The Minister commended the initiative and expressed his excitement at the First Solar Assemble Factory in Ghana which is a Ghanaian owned company.

He further mentioned that Government is working on a local content policy for the power sector to ensure active participation of local companies and indigenes and encouraged indigenous investors to invest in solar energy.

He further said the Government believes renewable energy has a future for domestic use as the future is opening up to renewable energy which is cost effective for households.

Taking the minister and his entourage through the facility, Randy Sey Managing Director of Trade Works Company Ltd disclosed the factory is 84% complete and due to be opened to the public soon.

He said the facility when commissioned will make solar panels more accessible and cost effective to Ghanaian homes and institutions.

He encouraged the Ministry and stakeholders to partner and collaborate with them for the use of local components.

The Minister said the government will collaborate with players in the industry and advised the power agencies to consider solar for their operations and also encouraged financial institutions to set up various protocol under which Workers can, on high- purchase, acquire solar not only to reduce the growing demand but to also cut down cost of power to households.

Touring the facility with the Minister also were the Deputy Minister of Power John Jinapor, Ag. Chief Director, of Ministry Power Mr Solomon Asoalla, CEO of VRA Kirk Koffie, CEO of GRIDCo William Amuna, Ag. MD of ECG, Ing. Robert Dwamena, Ag. Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission Michael Opam and some directors at the Ministry of Power.
