Newmont Mining Corporation has released its 2015 Sustainability report in which it says its Ghana operations generated about $464 Million dollars in economic value to various stakeholders in the country.

The annual report, known as Beyond the Mine, details Newmont’s global performance in safety, economic, social and environmental stewardship, as well as its commitment to ethical business practices.

According to the report, Newmont Ghana in 2015, paid about $74 million in employee wages and benefits; $60.5 million in taxes and royalties; and $6.6 million in community investments.

Newmont Africa’s Senior Director, Sustainability and External Relations, Paul Sowley, says in 2015 the Africa region made great strides in creating shared value for its stakeholders and ensured commitment to ethical business practices.

“Thanks to our employees, communities and other stakeholder, we made some collective gains from our collaborations last year. This report reflects our reporting obligations as a founding member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). “

Other highlights from the 2015 beyond the mine report on Newmont Africa

The Akyem mine Collaborated with the Forestry Commission to identify and allocate a 243 hectare site for its reforestation project.

Newmont and Project C.U.R.E. signed a new three-year partnership agreement, which calls for Newmont to contribute $200,000 annually for the next three years toward Project C.U.R.E.’s global healthcare efforts – such as its Helping Babies Breathe neonatal resuscitation program – and for Newmont’s commitment to deliver donated medical supplies worth $8 million to health facilities in developing countries including Ghana, Indonesia, Peru and Suriname.

Ahafo mine successfully resettled a total of 77 households during the reporting period. Community leaders, members of the multi-stakeholder Resettlement Negotiation Committee (RNC), and officials from the government's Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission were engaged in the survey’s data collection process to address concerns raised.

Final resettlement packages included livelihood re-establishment support and the commitment to use local contractors to construct the resettlement houses.

Apprenticeship program offers skilled mechanical and electrical specialist training. Graduates of the program are offered employment in a variety of roles including process operators, specialized trades and maintenance.

Newmont says it is committed to ensuring effective collaboration with its stakeholders to create value and improve lives through safe and responsible mining. The full report, as well as a downloadable PDF, is available at www.beyondthemine.com.
