Tigo Gives Children Silverbird Treat

Tigo Ghana Limited has held an executive reception at the Silverbird Cinema for a movie treat to children from less privileged communities in Accra as part of its Christmas corporate social responsibility and outreach programme.

The Silverbird executive movie reception drew over 300 children from the Africa Ball Community Development Programme at Nimah Community 2, children from the James Town community through the Street Academy, and other selected orphanages.

Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator of Tigo, Mr. Tuffuor Mensah Bonsu, said: “Christmas is a time of love, and Tigo as a fun-brand believes in showing love and giving people a first-time opportunity to experience things.”

He said the intention behind the programme was to offer children from deprived communities which have no parents, or others whose parents cannot afford to bring their children to the Accra Mall, to watch a movie.

The programme, he said, was to give such less-privileged children a feel of what their counterparts from ‘rich homes’ are exposed to in order to boost their morale, as some of these children might not have the same opportunity in their lifetime.

Children had the opportunity to watch animation movies which not only create excitement but also reinforced their ability to think creatively, boost their morale and self-esteem, and be encouraged to make positive childhood decisions.

The movie treat also offered each child access to food and drinks, as well as Tigo hampers which included a school-bag, exercise books, pen and pencil, water-bottle and a mug to give such children a new sense of hope for the new academic year.

Mr. Baffuor said the corporate social responsibility of Tigo for next year will be focused largely on children across the country, and will incorporate activities such as healthcare and education to prepare them for a productive future.

“The children are our future. If we take away the children of any society, it means that we are leaving that society dead. But when we bring up children with values, we are giving them something and a future to hope for,” he added.

He urged other corporate organisations to buy into the idea of Tigo with similar programmes that focus on improving the lives of less privileged children in communities, and giving them lifetime opportunities that enhance their emotional and psychological development.
