Government has backed the 20% increment in transport fares by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and transport owners.

According to Joyce Muntari, the Deputy Transport Minister the increment is as a result of a number of factors including, “maintenance of vehicle, payment of driver ...so like every other commodity, when our goods and services in terms of maintenance of transport increments are introduced, there is always a convex need for them to also increase their fares.”

The GPRTU in consultation with government on Friday announced a 20% increment in transport fares following increments in fuel prices.

In an interview with Citi News, Madam Muntari pointed out that the increment was necessitated following complaints from transport owners but however gave the assurance there could be possible negotiations with the leadership of GPRTU in the event of public outcry over the 20% increment.

Madam Muntari revealed plans by government to procure more buses for the Metro Mass Transit Company and intercity STC to augment the current transportation challenges.

She added that her ministry intends to “work on the railway system to ensure that more wagons are put on the very busy railway lines such as the Accra Tema route.”
