Election 2020: Is The NDC Exhibiting Hypocrisy?

It is more than a week since the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

President Akufo-Addo who was the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) pulled 6,730,587 votes representing 51.3% as against his competitor and flagbearer of the NDC John Dramani Mahama’s 6,213,182 votes.

But since the declaration, the leading opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) have refused to accept defeat, claiming the election was fraud and rigged by the Electoral Commission.

The NDC believe their collation of the results indicate that they have won the majority of the parliamentary seats not the NPP as announced by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

“We will not accept anything short of a declaration of the legitimate results which points to an NDC parliamentary majority”, Mahama asserted..

The NDC led by their flagbearer John Dramani Mahama have called for an independent forensic audit of the election results.

Days after the elections, the NDC have threatened to use every legitimate means to challenge the results – meaning a possible court action just like what the NPP did after the 2012 general elections.

Many bigheads in the business believe that’s the best option since only the Supreme Court can determine who has the best of case over the other.

Instead of concentrating on battling the decision at the court of law, the leaders of the NDC are rather utilizing their energies on inciting their supporters to embark on series of demonstrations as a sign of expressing their dissatisfaction with the elections result.

But with what happened at the Electoral Commission headquarters on last Thursday, the same type of demonstration could lead to a mayhem in the country since the NDC supporters who stormed the EC headquarters on Thursday morning nearly took a peaceful demonstration to another level but unfortunately for them, the police and the military arrived to salvage the situation.

These supporters burnt tyres on the roads, pelted stones and even caused a heavy vehicular traffic and congestion.

Surprisingly, 26 of the protestors who were unlucky were arrested by the police – because the demonstration was unlawful, they didn’t seek for permission before embarking the protest.

Why is the NDC not focusing on court action rather inciting supporters to demonstrate?.

In 2012, the same NDC criticized the NPP heavily for attempting to embark on demonstration as a sign of expressing their dissatisfaction with the election results then.

“NPP should stop demonstrating and go to court if they have confidence “, Haruna Iddrisu, the current Minority leader in Parliament said in 2012 after the elections.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah could be remembered for his popular comment, “Any idiot can go to court in a democracy”

This is when the NPP (With President Akufo-Addo as flagbearer then) lost the 2012 elections to the NDC (John Dramani Mahama as flagbearer and sitting President then after demise of Atta Mills) and had to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court where the NDC emerged victorious…

So why can’t the NDC follow suit if they have any problem with the election results rather inciting followers to disturb the public peace…
