Police Raid 'Armed Robbery Camp'

The Asokwa Police in Kumasi have arrested 16 people in two separate swoops on a suspected armed robbery camp located in a forest outside Nweneso No. Two in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region.

Though no deadly weapons were found at the camp, police said they impounded substances suspected to be cocaine, Indian hemp, a kitchen knife and five pairs of scissors.

The suspects were also said to have been caught smoking Indian hemp.

Fourteen of the suspects have since been arraigned before court in Kumasi and remanded into prison custody for two weeks while the two others, Victoria Gyamfi alias Nana Adwoa, 32, and Yaw Asare, 32, teacher, are in police custody.

The 14 are Kwaku Marfo, alias Barima, 47, Perpetual Owusu, 16, Mary Akosua Mensuwaah, 33, Richard Amakye, 31, Kwaku Bonnah, 25, and Akwasi Poku, 28.

The rest are Yaw Amankwah, 22, Okyere Boateng, 25, Kwasi Poku, 26, Yaw Amankwah, 30, Afia Mansah, 19, Kwaku Nsiah aka Daada, 22, and Kofi Mensah, 64.

They were charged with possession of narcotic drugs without authority.

Police said they are investigating in a bid to get some information about arms and ammunition.

Briefing graphic.com.gh, the Asokwa District Police Commander, Superintendent E.A. Akunnor said on July 10, 2012, the police had information that some persons had set up a camp at Nweneso No. Two.

Police personnel from Asokwa were consequently dispatched to the area for investigations.

The district commander said the police located the camp at the outskirts of the village where about 20 men and women were found smoking suspected Indian hemp.

The fourteen persons were arrested, detained at Asokwa police station and later put before court.
