AN OBUASI circuit court has sentenced a 38-year-old man who was involved in a robbery incident at the site of a small-scale mining company in the Obuasi municipality.

Sentences totaling forty-five-and-a-half years were passed on Collins Kwame Sefa, aka Efo, an illegal mining operator, for conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery and unlawful possession of military uniform.

The court, presided over by Alexander Graham, found him guilty, and sentenced him to 40 years for attempted robbery, five years for unlawful possession of military uniform and six months for conspiracy to commit crime, to wit – robbery – but the sentences are to run concurrently.

He and his gang of 18 other men held up workers of Max-Morrison Mining Company at Sanso in Obuasi, after storming the site with AK47 assault rifles, pump action guns and other weapons on May 22, 2013, police prosecutor, ASP Daniel Kwabena Darko, had earlier informed the court.

According to him, the gangsters, who were dressed in military uniforms with face masks, fired several gunshots to put fear into the workers as they (robbers) attempted to loot, but their action was shot-lived.

DSP Kwabena Darko said the convict, Collins Kwame Sefa, was wounded by a Chinese national who parried the attack during exchange of fire.

Sensing danger, other members of the gang took to their heels and went into hiding.

The prosecution disclosed that the police evacuated Sefa to the Obuasi Government Hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds on the head and ribs.

He was later charged with the offences and arraigned for prosecution after police investigations into the case had been completed.
