Three persons, including an 18-year-old girl who allegedly robbed a trader of jewellery valued at GH˘13,000 at knife point, have been put before an Accra Circuit Court for robbery.

The 18-year-old, Aklama Akweite Peter and his two alleged accomplices, Aklama Daniel and Ayanu Yaw, were put before a court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri and charged with conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

They denied the charges and have been remanded to appear on November 4, 2014.

Narrating events leading to the arrest of the accused persons, the prosecutor, DSP Ernest Acheampong, told the court that the complainant, Salimatu Iddrisu, is a trader in jewellery while the girl is unemployed.

He said Daniel Aklama is 22 years old while Ayanu is 25-year-old painter.

According to DSP Ernest Acheampong, the suspects are relatives who reside at Chantang Six to Six area of the Greater Accra Region in a family house.

He said on October 3, 2014 – on the eve of Eid-Ul-Adha – the trader, who plies her trade at Nima, a suburb of Accra, decided to take her jewellery home as customers would be coming to buy some for the occasion.

The prosecutor maintained that when the trader had closed and was walking with her daughter, Sawudatu Mohammed – a witness in the case – the accused persons attacked them and robbed them of the gold and copper jewellery valued at GH˘13,000 as well as some personal effects, including phones and GH˘650.

Furthermore, he said that the complainant’s daughter identified the 18-year-old girl and reported the matter to the police.

In addition, he said the police were led to the house of the accused person by the complainant and he was arrested and he in turn led the police to arrest his two relatives.

The police officer explained that the accused persons denied the offences in their caution statements but during investigations the complainant’s handbag containing the jewellery was found in a trench in the area the following day.

He said on October 7 the complainant, acting on information, led the police to a spot near Nii Boi Town where a number of jewelleries was found with some scattered in a nearby bush.

He said they were consequently arraigned after the police had concluded investigations.
