The Half Assini Magistrate’s court in the Jomoro District has granted a GHC4,000.00 bail with one surety to a 50-year-old Landlady at Half-Assini in Western Region, accused of stealing from a tenant’s room.
Sophia Awuah pleaded not guilty and the court, presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Illiasu, ordered her to reappear on Friday, October 23.
Prosecuting, Police Corporal Richard Amoah told the court that complainant in the case was Mr Gname Modesto Seri, an Ivorian national seeking refuge in Ghana, while the accused was a chop bar keeper and a landlady at Half Assini.
The prosecution said in September this year, the complainant rented three rooms from the accused at Half-Assini.
According the prosecution, Seri and his landlady were the only people living in the house.
He said after renting the room, the landlady gave the complainant four keys to the rooms.
Cpl. Amoah said three weeks later the complainant detected Ghc1,200.00 of the GHC4,000.00 hidden in a laptop bag inside a ward-drop in his bedroom was missing.
He said the complainant claimed that he could not complain and kept it to himself.
According to the Prosecutor, the complainant said on October 2, he kept another GHC1,600.00 at the same place and Ghc800.00 out of it got missing.
He said this time the complainant suspected his landlady because only the two of them lived on the compound.
He said the complainant, therefore, contacted his Landlady before witnesses to know if she has spare key to his rooms but she denied any knowledge about the theft in his room.
The Prosecutor said the complainant along the line changed the lock to his bedroom to avoid further theft in his room.
He said in a few days, the complainant said he found a key at their entrance to the compound and when he took it, he realised that it opened the old lock to his bedroom so he showed it to his landlady.
The prosecution said the landlady said she also saw it at the place a fortnight ago but ignored it.
The complainant, not convinced with her answer, lodged a complaint with the Police resulting in her arrest on October 4, he said.
He said the accused denied knowledge of the theft in her Police caution statement but, however ,admitted having seen the key.
