Like seriously? The 17 doctors couldn't figure out before performing the surgery that the twins shared intestines? Sure, they wanted to save these twins, but their negligence amounts to medical malpractice and they should be held accountable.
We Didn't Know Conjoined Twins Shared Intestines – GMA
Surgeons at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) say they discovered rather belatedly that conjoined twins who after a surgery to separate them that they shared some bowels.
The twins died barely 48 hours after a team of 17 surgeons separated in an operation that lasted 12 hours and shown live in MultiTV Joy News Channel.
The plight of the twins gained national attention when as part of a documentary on malformed babies, Joy News' Seth Kwame Boateng focused on them.
It emerged that doctors had recommended a surgery to separate the twins but the parents could not bear the cost.
MTN and Joy FM raised the need funds and after a number of postponements, the surgery came off Tuesday but one of the twins whom doctors said had a hole-in heart condition died Wednesday evening. The other died Thursday morning.
According to Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah, doctors are set to a postmortem on babies as part investigations into the failed surgery.
A Pediatric Surgeon at the hospital, Frank Serebour, said the conjoined twins shared some intestines which made the operation very complicated.
“At a point we were even struggling to know whether they had the same bowels or separate bowels and I think at surgery they realized that there were some bowels that were being shared” he noted.
"I think the surgery went well, but sometimes after surgery the issues about post surgical care is also another thing all together.
“Sometimes both anticipated and unanticipated complications come in and you end up losing the babies”.
The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association also added that the doctors took a bold step to decide that there was the need for the separation to happen.
