The Volta Regional Directorate of Health Services has designated some of the health facilities close to the numerous border posts in the region to handle any reported Ebola case.
As a result of this decision, the Regional Health Directorate organised a strategic meeting in Ho for key health workers, including public Health Nurses, Disease Control officers, Managers. The participants were taken through the process of identifying suspected Ebola cases.
Addressing the health personnel at the meeting, the Volta Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Joseph Teye-Nuertey, stressed that anybody identified with severe headache, vomiting of blood, blood coming through the nose, anus, and other openings of the human body, accompanied with intense bodily pains, should be examined for possible Ebola disease.
Dr. Teye-Nuertey revealed that the Sogakope, Aflao, Hohoe, Jasikan and Nkwanta hospitals, as well as the Regional Hospital in Ho, have been designated to treat any Ebola patient.
The Regional Director of Health Services made it clear that the incubation period of any Ebola patient was between two to 21 days, and that within that period, the disease could not be transferred to any other person, explaining further that Ebola was not an air-born disease, and advised immigration personnel at the various borders to stop using masks for the nose and mouth.
Dr. Teye-Nuertey assured health workers in the region that adequate preparations had been made to provide them with enough protective materials to handle any Ebola case, stressing that the only way Ghanaians could be free from the disease was to be more vigilant and wash their hands with soap after interacting with people.
