FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital has commissioned a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine in a short ceremony at the 70-bed hospital facility in Pantang, Accra.

Co-sponsored by US-based philanthropic couple, Wayne and Claire Heyland, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the MRI will enhance the hospital’s imaging capability to diagnose and treat various musculoskeletal conditions.  Already equipped with a CT scanner and other powerful- X-ray machines, the MRI will complement the leading orthopedic hospital’s array of radiological equipment.

Speaking at the commissioning, Founder and CEO of FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital, Prof Emeritus Oheneba Boachie-Adjei said, “We are very grateful to GNPC and the Heylands for coming together to help FOCOS acquire an MRI machine to provide the highest quality orthopedic care to the underserved in our society”.

“In the past, we have sent patients out to other facilities to get MRI studies and this sometimes delayed timely diagnosis and disrupted service delivery at the hospital.”

The CEO of GNPC, Dr. K. K. Sarpong, said, “We are proud to be part of the success story at FOCOS, and to make essential healthcare services available to patients who are in need.  GNPC has facilitated multiple investments in health, to boost the capacity of specialized facilities to reduce the burden imposed on them.  We trust that the management of the hospital will indeed make good use of this facility to provide positive health outcomes for patients.”

As part of the agreement with FOCOS, GNPC will fund the treatment of a number of needy patients with severe orthopedic conditions over the next five years, in its areas of operation. This is already underway with the successful treatment of six patients with complex spine problems in 2018, followed by community orthopedic screening in the Shama district of the Western Region in January 2019.

As a non-profit organization, the cost of major surgical procedures averages 10% – 20%, of similar procedures in western countries.

The commissioning of the MRI, which is a Public-Private-Partnership, marks another milestone in the hospital’s progress to maintain the standards of care to improve the quality of life for Ghanaians and others coming through our doors.

FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital was established by the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine as a non-profit organization in 1998 to address the growing orthopedic burden in Ghana.

The Hospital is one of very few specialist orthopedic hospitals in Africa that specializes in complex spine deformities and disorders, club foot, joint replacement, orthopedic rehabilitation, and family medicine. Other services provided by specialists at the hospital include Diet and Nutrition, Physiotherapy, comprehensive Laboratory and Community Pharmacy services.

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) was established in 1983 by PNDC Law 64, as Ghana’s national oil company, with the mandate to undertake exploration, development, production, and disposal of petroleum.

GNPC is anchor partner in all upstream operations in Ghana, currently operates the Voltaian Basin Project, and is the national gas aggregator, leading the efforts to commercialize domestic gas and to ensure national energy security.  GNPC’s vision is to be a leading global oil and gas company whose operations have a profound impact on the quality of life of the people of Ghana.
