Fire on Sunday swept through a section of the Kumasi Central Market destroying property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Eyewitnesses' accounts indicated that the fire started around 8pm at the cloth selling area near the market storey building, (Edwom Aborosan).

The extent of damage is yet to be established and it is also not clear as of now if there were any casualties.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service had a tough time bringing the situation under control.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Samuel Sarpong has since visited the scene and eyewitnesses said but for the timely intervention of the firefighting personnel, the fire could have spread to other parts of the market.

Mr Sarpong said the real extent of damage could not be determined immediately since the incident happened at night.
