THE ASHAIMAN Circuit Court presided over by Justice Tsatsu Yao Azumah on Monday convicted and sentenced an 18 year old trader, Paa Kwasi to a fine of GH¢500 or in default spend six months in prison for stealing a quantity of ladies’ sandals from a another trader at the Tema main market.
His accomplice, 17 year old trader Francis Quicoe who appeared in court as well was however referred to a juvenile court for sentencing.
Looking remorseful, the two boys did not waste time pleading guilty and asked the court to deal leniently with them as this was the first time they had committed such an offence.
Chief Inspector Mary Assan, the prosecutor in the case old the court the complainant deals in ladies’ sandals at the Tema Community 1 main market.
The two boys according to the chief inspector are also traders at the same market. Both the complainant and the accused persons are said to be residents of Tema.
Ms. Assan noted that recently the complainant detected that a quantity of her sandals which she keeps in a shop at the market were missing, compeling her to inform her other colleagues to be on the alert for the thief.
A few days later she received information that the accused persons were selling some sandals suspected to be the ones stolen from her at another part of the market.
The complainant in the company of other traders rushed to the scene where they found the duo offering the sandals for sale. She caused their immediate arrest and they were subsequently handed over to the police in Tema.
Paa Kwasi and his juvenile accomplice were later interrogated by the police during which they admitted the offence.
The boys allegedly told police they offered the stolen sandals for sale at the same market to be able to raise money to support their businesses.
The two were later arraigned before the circuit court after investigations. In the courtroom they took turns to explaining how they stole the sandals and how they were found, arrested and handed over to police for prosecution.
