The Police have launched investigations into the incident in which three ladies who were caught for allegedly shoplifting at the Accra Shopping Mall were subjected to inhumane treatment.

A statement signed by the Director-General of Police Public Affairs, Rev David Nenyo Ampah-Bennin said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) have been tasked to investigate the matter.

A video on Youtube which went viral Tuesday showed security personnel at the mall ordering the three ladies to crawl from the shop to the main entrance while onlookers filmed and took photographs of the incident.

The ladies were said to have stolen panties from Mr Price shop.

The Police Administration condemned the incident and described it as an abuse of human rights.

According to the police, Section 14 (1) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960, states that “A private person who, without a warrant, arrests another person shall without unnecessary delay hand over the person so arrested to a Police Officer or, in the absence of a Police Officer, shall take the arrested person to the nearest Police Station.”

It said no one, apart from the court, has got the right to mete out punishment to persons suspected in any criminal case.

The statement further entreated the public to be mindful of their rights and responsibilities, with regard to arrest, under the law, and desist from meting out “instant justice” to persons they suspect to have committed offences.
