Work on the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast, has began in earnest as temporally stalls have been provided for the traders.

Chinese contractors are already on site and the much awaited project will be complete within a year.

President John Mahama, arrived at the Project site to a heroic welcome to inspect progress of work as part of his two day working visit to the Central region. The Kotokuraba Market was one of the flagship projects of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The Omanhene of the OguaaTraditional Area Osabarima Kwesi Atta, asked President Mahama to remain focus as he pursues his development agenda for the region and the entire country.

The Kotokuraba Market is the economic hub of the Central region and has existed since the pre-independence era. The name Kotokuraba means "Crab Market" and it originated from early settlers who made a living from the abundance of Crabs in the area. Like other markets the Kotokuraba market has had its fair share of market fires, theft and other mishaps.

In 2011, the Late Professor John Mills whilst on a visit to the Republic of China sourced for a concessionary loan to rehabilitate the age old Kotokuraba Market which he unfortunately did not live to see it take off.

The Chinese contractors have mobilised on the site and work has began on a project many have doubted will ever materialise.

The Omanhene of Oguaa Traditional Area Osabarima Kwesi Atta, is amazed at the extent of work done. He urges the President not to be distracted by people who seek to make his government unpopular

President John Mahama, reiterated his commitment to complete all the projects earmarked for the region by his Predecessor. He was hopeful that his next visit to the Market will be to inaugurate a modern Kotokuraba market

Radio Ghana, caught up with some market women who have been allocated stallls in the temporally market structure.

They are excited the project is progressing steadily but are calling for security measures to taken to safeguard their wares against theft and market fires

From the Kotokuraba Market, the President visited the Cape Coast Stadium, which is also under construction. Surface work on the fifteen seater capacity staduim has started.
