Credible information reaching Today points to a looming tension in Alajo, a suburb of Accra, following allegations that former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso Central, Sheikh I.C. Quaye, is planning to sell the only football park in the area to some business men.
That intention, Today gathered, has gotten football enthusiasts in the area furious, with many threatening to take the former MP on should he go ahead with his plan.
But in a telephone conversation with Sheikh I.C. Quaye, he made it clear that the park in question is his property which he acquired 50 years ago.
He went on to deny selling the park to some business men though, he admitted taking some people to the said land which was near where he was building a community school.
I have no intention of selling this park and I will not sell it for anything, he categorically stated.
Fuming with anger, he threatened to sue the bank roller of Farcos FC if he does not stop peddling falsehood about him.
..Nonsense, where was he [Leonard] when I and my family acquired this land fifty years ago, he said.
That notwithstanding, football fans who spoke to the paper described the intended move by I.C. Quaye as wicked and cruel.
This pitch serves more than five football clubs including Great Farcos FC, Evergreen FC, and Prince FC etc.
Selling the pitch to a business man will kill many young football talents in Alajo and its surroundings, football enthusiasts told this reporter.
According to them, the situation has brought discomfort to most footballers and fans in the community, who believe the pitch is the only recreational centre in the packed Alajo township.
In an interview with Today, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and bank roller of Farcos FC, Mr. Leonard Ahouanchede (aka) Toroo, he noted that he cannot fathom why I.C. Quaye was bent on selling the only pitch left for the Alajo community.
He alleged that he had seen I.C. Quaye on a number of occasions with white men suspected to be prospective buyers for the football park.
Children were playing football on the field and when he asked them to stop; and later he went ahead to measure the pitch with the intention of selling the field, he averred.
According to him, the former MP had one-time claimed ownership of the community park, which he said, was vehemently protested by residents.
I.C Quaye cant claim ownership of the park because I remember very well that government some years back under ex-President Rawlings declared the park as a community field which was published on the front page of the Daily Graphic, he recounted.
We dont have any park here [Aljao] apart from this one, he noted.
Continuing, the bankroller of Farcos FC said some great footballers this country has produced including Abedi Pele, Tanko Ayuba, Isaah Amid, Theophilus Amuzu among others all played on the park.
