Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has called on the Urban Roads Department to exercise its authority on the contractor working on a six-kilometre road in Accra.

Dr Vanderpuije registered his protest when he led members of the AMA to inspect ongoing work on some roads within the metropolis as well as check the progress of the street naming exercise.

The team visited Osu to inspect routine road maintenance works in the area.

Dr Vanderpuije said the bitumen spread on the road is not enough to hold the chippings, which would eventually find its way back into the gutters when it rains.

He said the AMA has initiated massive road maintenance works in the sub-metropolitan areas in Accra to prevent the threat of danger to road users.

He was not happy about the quality of the road resealing that was completed within the Osuklottey area.

According to him, the resealing of the roads is targeted at the rainy season to prevent the creation of potholes; therefore the roads need to be robust enough.

He stated that the assembly would sit with officials of the Urban Roads Department and the contractors to find out their concerns about the resealing of the roads.

In relation to the street naming and signage programme, the MCE expressed his satisfaction about the progress of the work done so far by the contractors. “The inscriptions are bold and legible enough for motorist to see,” he added.

He seized the opportunity to thank the World Bank for its support, and assured that the assembly would put the funds provided it to good use.

Mr Kwadwo Yeboah, Director of Town and Country Planning, stated that work for the street naming and signage was going on smoothly; however, they were facing challenges of communities rejecting some of the names though there have been deliberations.

He also noted that people have also erected structures at where some of the signs are to be situated.

However, according to him, they have been successful in erecting a number of poles and arms for the naming of the streets within the metropolis, and assured that addresses would be added to the names soon.

Mr Emmanuel Nortey, Urban Roads Department, in charge of the resealing of the roads, stated that 85% of the work was almost completed in the Osuklottey area, and assured that by June work will be fully completed. He noted that the project targets 100km of roads within the metropolis.
