The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Zoomlion have embarked on a fumigation exercise against cholera outbreaks at Odawna and some flooded areas.
This follows the recent explosion and flooding at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and its environs leading to the loss of many lives.
Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, the Director of Public Health of the AMA who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said his outfit in partnership with the Zoomlion have intensified their efforts at monitoring hygienic conditions in the affected areas.
“There could be a cholera outbreak when major disasters like floods occur, hence the need to quickly fumigate the affected areas,” he said.
Dr Anim Boateng said the fumigation programme, which would continue for a month, started from Glefe at Dansoman then to Abeka and its environs, Odawna and Asylum Down, near the Christian Methodist Senior High School area.
He called on the people to be more responsive to environmental issues through sustained public education in the media.
Mr Gabriel Teye, a representative of Zoomlion said: “we urgently need to fumigate all affected areas, especially where many people lost their lives against the outbreak of any disease in such areas.
Meanwhile the Ghana Water Company Limited has provided three water tankers to the affected flood victims behind the Ghana Commercial Bank Towers at Odawna.
