The swift action taken by firemen and security personnel prevented a near fire disaster at the Petrosol filing station at Inchaban in the Shama District of the Western Region.

At about 7 am a fuel tanker which was discharging fuel at the station had its valve leaking causing smoldering all over the area and beyond.

Sensing danger, fire personnel from the Western Regional office were called and joined by their counterparts from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), as well as police personnel,  who quickly brought  situation under control.

The situation was so frightening that officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) started moving into the community to stop people from using naked fire and their mobile phones.

They also distributed soda water to people to drink.

Thankfully, there was no casualty, nor any property lost.

This brought vehicular movement to a stand-still for quite a long time.

Interestingly, an eye witness man started lighting matches to smoke his cigarette, but he was quickly disciplined, while some wanted to assault him.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO), in charge of the Western Region, Mr   Obeng Dwamena,  told the GNA that the tanker had been evacuated to a safe place, while investigation had started.

The Regional Fire Officer expressed gratitude to the security personnel and all those who assisted to bring the situation under control.

Mr Enoch Kojo Appiah, District Chief Executive for Shama, who was present at the scene, thanked the people for acting swiftly to prevent yet another national catastrophe.

On June 3, a similar incident occurred in Accra that claimed over 100 lives and injured several others.
